B - Rad's Class
Rich Bradley (B-Rad)
Welcome to B - Rad's class. I am a local guy who has lived in the Conejo Valley area for 45 years. I graduated from Agoura High School, where I played three sports and participated in the theater program. Almost immediately following graduation from high school, I completed an apprenticeship in the Plumbers and Steamfitters Union. In 1994-1995, I was one of the plumbers who built the Getty Center in Los Angeles. I went back to school in the fall of 1996. I earned a Bachelor's of Arts in History at California Lutheran University in Thousand Oaks in 2001, while working full time as a plumber and steamfitter. On November 4, 2002, while working to complete my teaching credential, I was involved in a serious accident on a construction site in which I severely broke my back. I endured a very long, lonely, and painful rehabilitation in which I had to overcome temporary paralysis. I was able to complete my teaching credential in 2004 and began teaching at Newbury Park High School in August, 2005, where I have been ever since. I earned a Master's of Arts in American Studies from Pepperdine University in 2015. At NPHS, I teach American Government and Politics, Economics, Anthropology, and Comparative Religions. In addition, I am a co-adviser for NPHS's chapter of the National Honor Society and I coach the the school's Unified Team for the Special Olympics. Teaching has enabled me to see a lot of the United States as I have traveled to several teacher seminars at historical landmarks. This past summer I was selected to be a participant in the Holy Land Democracy Project Teacher Study Trip in Israel, which was life changing. I am always excited to bring my experiences back to my students in order to enhance their educational experience.
I recently celebrated my 25th anniversary wife my beautiful wife Sandy in November. My beautiful daughter Megan is in the US Army Reserves and is a sophomore at Cal Poly Pomona where she is first chair French horn in the symphonic band, and my twin sons, Jake and Josh, are in 7th grade at Redwood Middle School and are active in multiple sports. I coach my sons in multiple sports as well. I have an energetic little Jack Russell Terrier named Annie who goes everywhere with us. I am an avid fan of the Los Angeles Angels, New York Giants, Los Angeles Lakers, and Los Angeles Kings. I also staunchly support all things associated with MY Pepperdine Waves! I enjoy visiting the ballparks of America. My favorite Major League ballpark is Wrigley Field, home of the Chicago Cubs, and my favorite Minor League ballpark is Regions Field in Birmingham, Alabama, home of the Birmingham Barons. I believe that the ROCKY film franchise is the greatest in American cinematic history, Clint Eastwood has never made a bad movie, Curly from the Three Stooges was robbed of more than one Academy Award, Seinfeld is the greatest television show ever with George Costanza as the greatest television character ever., Elvis Presley is THE King of Rock and Roll and Van Halen is the greatest band of all time, pizza should be its own food group, black licorice is the greatest candy in the world, and In-N-Out Burger is absolute perfection. John Wooden, Jackie Robinson, and Martin Luther King, Jr. are heroes that I constantly look to for inspiration; of course, my dad will always be my first role model and source of advice.
Apart from marrying my wife, going into the teaching profession has been the greatest decision I have ever made. Throughout my time as a teacher I have spent a great deal of time reflecting on why I teach, why I teach the way that I do, and what would it feel like to be taught by me. This constant reflection has enabled me to establish a mission statement. My mission as a teacher is to develop young people of character, resilience and integrity who will lead, be accountable and change the world for good. I believe in developing the whole person, not just the student. I like to think of the role of a teacher as being similar to that of Dorothy’s in the Wizard of Oz. Dorothy encouraged her charges and built up their self-esteem by building relationships with them in order to lead them down path to help them to discover attributes within each of them that they did not realize they had. Teaching is all about relationships. Transformational teaching takes place when the students know you believe in them and inspires them to follow. I believe that teaching should not just be about teaching young people how to make a living. It is far more important to teach them how to make a life. Over the years I have learned so much from my students and my sincere hope is that the feeling has been mutual. I truly cherish the opportunity to work with this year's group of students. The students did not choose to have me as their teacher, and I did not choose to have them as students - we were meant to be together! Let's get at it to make it happen with no regrets!
